He shall save his people from their sins
Matt 1:21 ““And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”
The Creator of the Universe did not leave us in doubt as to why he gave us the greatest gift of all – His only begotten Son! Both Mary and Joseph were told to call his name ‘Yeshua’, Jesus. God was about to make good his promise from the creation of the world. A promise he made at the garden of Eden, the very day sin came into the world, and man fell. God promised that the seed of the woman would bruise the head of the serpent. “…you shall call his name Jesus…”. His beautiful name captures the promises, the prophecies, the writings and the expectations of God’s people about God’s Messiah.
Yeshua (Jehovah saves) will save his people from their sins.
My profession has acquainted me with the process of making a diagnosis- finding out the root problem of the patient by taking history, conducting physical examination and tests. Making the correct diagnosis is always a top priority as the patient’s survival depends on that. Providing the correct treatment and getting the patient well is even more exhilarating and satisfying. On the other hand, a wrong diagnosis could be disastrous and could cost the very life of the patient.
In providing us Yeshua and declaring that he will save us from our sins, The LORD, the greatest Physician, makes a pin-point diagnosis of humanity’s sickness and provides the only treatment, the exact remedy! We trust our doctors and accept the treatments they give us when we are unwell, even when we know the doctors could be wrong, how much more should we trust Our Maker, our infallible doctor, and accept his provision for our salvation.
As humans, we love comfort. We would like to be in health, live in riches with all our needs met, eat the best of foods, have access to the cleanest air and water, live in the best part of town, attend the best schools and have access to social security. We therefore tend to regard as our major problem, any situation threatening the attainment of these ideals. All the global cooperative efforts and concerns such as the UN, WHO, World Food Programme, UNICEF, etc exist precisely to solve our problems and keep us comfortable. Yet, our experience on the planet has continued to demonstrate that humanity’s problem is much more than poverty, disease, famine, nuclear war threat, global warming, and the like. The root of it all lies in our hearts – the sin infested heart.
God’s word says
“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” Rom 3:23
“Behold the Lord’s hand is not shortened that it cannot save, neither his ear heavy that it cannot hear but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear” Isaiah 59:1 – 2
In his mercy, God himself provides the remedy for sin. What loving wisdom of our God! He hits humanity’s problem at its very root – its very foundation. I am grateful to the Great Physician who has lovingly diagnosed and provided treatment for our disease.
What a privilege everyone has to open the door of their hearts and receive God’s forgiveness! The promised One is here – to save us from our sins! He is here to deal a mortal blow to sin that held us captive since that fateful day at the garden of Eden. He is here to wash us clean, reconcile us to God, give our lives a meaning, and give us eternal life.
The Eternal One, the Creator of the ends of the Earth, the maker and master of our Universe, has fulfilled his promise and given us His Son! The call today to respond to this outpouring of love rings across peoples, kindred, tribes, tongues and nations on the planet – in all places where sin has had dominion over people. Blessed are all those who respond to this with an open heart.
You shall call his name JESUS for he shall save his people from their sins.
This is God’s generous gift to all. This is His promise fulfilled. This is the prescription for humanity’s monstrous disease of sin.
